- and not a blackberry in sight. I guess it must be off-season for blackberries.

A fairy tale was read to me a few years ago by the title of "The Blackberry Princess." I can't remember at all what the story was about, but the title always stuck in my head. I finally conjured up an image to go with the title after letting it all stew for a couple years. I figure she's some sort of regal denizen of faerie who spends far too much time tromping around in blackberry patches, hence the torn & stained dress. Seems like I'm on a tangled hair kick these days...

My humans always seem to turn out a bit wonky, but other than that I guess I'm reasonably satisfied with this piece.

Acrylic & colored pencil

Thanks!
I use Prismacolor Verithin pencils, but only for outlining and sometimes gently darkening shadow arrows, but really it's mostly paint.

Paper is Fabriano Artistico 300 lb. cold press watercolor paper.

Nice to see this piece completed! What portions are colored pencil? I have had trouble getting colored pencil to stick to acrylic painted surfaces in the past. Do you put down the pencil layer first?

I like how you gave pink/purple tints to her dress, and to the piece in general. Really gives it a late-evening-sunset sort of feel.

My only compositional suggestion is that while the piece is technically masterful, I feel like it could tell more of a specific story. "Blackberry Princess" really invites a unique story, but I feel that without the title, this could even be Snow White (ok, with pointy ears) running through the woods looking for shelter instead of berries. Maybe if you had included just one berry on one of the brambles, or a basket, or some other small element that would distinguish this princess from others who also find themselves in a dilemma in the woods.

The colored pencil parts are outlines (it may be hard to tell, but almost everything is outlined) and very faintly in some shadow areas like her neck, the deepest fold of her dress and the foreground trees. There's really not much pencil at all. I start adding colored pencil when I begin to lose edges after I've been painting for a while and then finishing touches when I'm wrapping up. Yeah, colored pencil doesn't work if the paint starts getting thick, but as long as it's somewhat thin it can still be effective.

Yeah - it's pretty nebulous story-wise with only blackberry bushes, but no actual blackberries - it does kind of bug me. If it had been commercial work you can be sure I would have included some blackberries because I know a publisher would have had a fit about it and rightly so! I guess I'm a bit lazier when it comes to personal work...
