I thought surely something odd is going on when I logged-in this morning and saw over 1300 message in my in-box.  So, many thanks to :iconsylwiatelari: for featuring my painting The Crane's Captive for a Daily Deviation!  I'm sure you all understand I won't be able to reply to each and every message, but I do read and greatly appreciate each and every message. :)

On an aside, has anybody every tried using acryla gouache?  If yes, did you like it/hate it?  Is it more like acrylic or more like gouache?  Or a really good hybrid of the two?  I'm so interested in trying it out, but I'm hestiant to buy a small set only to find out I don't really like it.  (I'll probably try it regardless, but I'm curious about others' experiences with it.)  And am I right in thinking that it's the same as the "poster paints" used in so many anime backgrounds in the past??

I also, have to say thanks to :iconlisa-of-the-moon: and :iconanjaleck: for recent journal features!  Much appreciated!

Hope everyone's having a good weekend!  :)

I grew tired of my old, cluttered website, so I decided to do a complete overhaul - [link]
I think my old design was maybe a bit 'prettier,' but this new one is much more clean and straightforward.  There are a few pieces of art in the gallery that I've never posted online before, but most of it is already posted in my gallery here.

Also, I set up a Facebook page for my work if anybody cares to follow - [link]
It will mostly mirror the content on my blog, but I think I can find some extra tidbits here and there to toss in.  Plus, I think it's a better place for interaction, than say blogs, or maybe even DA.  So, come take a look if you like!  :)

I think this journal entry will look almost exactly like my previous entry, but it's new and a little bit different - really it is!  The Allen Public Library [link] asked me to set up yet another display in their gallery/lobby for the month of June.

The illustrations in this display are from two of my books The New House [link] and A Place for Zero [link] exhibit will be on display in case #4 in the gallery/lobby through June 25, 2012.  A pic of the display case is viewable on my blog:  [link]

So, if you happen to be nearby, please stop by to see it and check out the other displays too!

I don't know if I have any local watchers, but in the possibility that I do, the Allen Public Library [link] is currently running a display of some of my artwork.

Most of the illustrations are from my two books What's Your Angle, Pythagoras? [link] and Pythagoras and the Ratios [link] on display are some process pieces - sketches, character designs, and really old color studies created during the making of the books. The exhibit will be on display in case #5 in the gallery/lobby throughout January, 2012.  A pic of the display case is viewable on my blog:  [link]

So, if you're in the area, please stop by to see it and check out the other artists on display too!

Does anyone else feel like the summer just never ends?  We get four solid months of unrelenting 90+ degree heat here in Texas which means our family and friends who live in cooler climes get four solid months of our unrelenting whining about the heat.  It's great for swimming, but not much else.  We've got an escape-to-the-north vacation planned for the end of the summer, but it just can't come soon enough.  What do you guys do in the summer when it's too hot to spend much time outside?  Or do you just try to escape from it like we do?

Ah - I'm so bad about updating my journal here on DA.  I've been more consistent with my blog recently however.  I pretty much only post finished art here, so if you're at all interested in seeing preliminary sketches and random doodles you're more likely to find them here:  [link]

Hope everyone's having a good summer!  Stay cool!

So it seems I've received an unusually large number of llama badges recently and I feel like I must be missing something...  Is something going on with llama badges these days?  Or was I featured somewhere that I'm maybe not aware of?  Anybody want to satisfy my curiosity and clue me in to what's up with the llamas?

Oh, and by the way - thanks for all the llamas!  It looks like I'm albino now.  I wasn't aware they went higher than "super" until recently. :)

I'd bought a couple pieces of art from Etsy in the past and liked the venue pretty well, so I thought I'd give it a try myself and open my own shop. Several originals from my website and all prints (except for the "Blackberry Princess" print) have been relocated to the new shop. A few new originals have been added to the listings as well.  Some of the originals that were previously listed on my site have been deeply discounted for the holidays - you'll just have to take my word for it since I had to take them down from my website! this journal once in a while....  We've had some not insignificant happenings since my last update -

First off - March saw the release of a translation of my books, What's Your Angle, Pythagoras? into Arabic!  You can see the cover of the translated book here:  [link]

Following lay-offs in January, my husband landed a new job at id Software(woo-hoo!) [link] starting in April which required a sudden and immediate move yet again.  Luckily this time it was just a regional move rather than long-distance, so it went much more quickly and smoothly.  We're still adjusting to our new city - not sure what to think of it yet, but most importantly my husband is really happy at his new job so far.  Now we just have to wait out this scorching summer before we can get out and explore some more...

I think I've fallen hopelessly behind in messages here on DA.  So to all I'll issue a communal apology for not spending as much time and attention to that as I'd like and a great big thank-you for all favs, comments, watching, llama badges(!) etc.  I truly appreciate it all.

And some thank yous for journal features over the last few months to:

that last bit of shameless promotion with a little more shameless promotion this time on my own behalf.  I'm very excited to announce the release of my most recent book, Pythagoras and the Ratios (Charlesbridge Publishing) which just came out this month.  If you know any kids learning about ratios, then this is the book for them.

Aside from the two deviations I uploaded, I had posted two more interior illustrations on my blog some time ago if you haven't already viewed them.  They are here:  [link]

The book is available from most major retailers both online and brick-and-mortar stores, although you may have to order it in at local retailers as many probably won't have it in stock.

I also have a huge back-log of messages to go through, so if I haven't replied anyone - sorry!  I'll get through them eventually...

FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS' PARTNERSHIP

According to our sources
THE HOUSE WILL TRY TO PASS THE ORPHAN WORKS BILL TODAY

10.3.08

If this Bill is only meant to help libraries and museums, why did they draft it behind closed doors?

Why have the doors been opened wide for commercial infringement of the work of living authors actively licensing their work?

Why do they want to pass it when nobody's looking?

Why do they want to re-write copyright law without an open debate?

Stop this effort to give content to Big Internet firms by undermining copyright law.

Get the word out.

    · Light up Washington and home offices of your Congressman.
    · Contact the media.
    · Deny them cover. Do not let them hide.

Tell them we will hold each of them accountable.

THE MESSAGE for your Congressman, Key Leaders, Aides, Media

· The "Dark Archive"  - where infringers can register their paperwork in  secret  - will not protect our copyrights.

· An "Open Archive" - with orphaned work exposed to to the public - would be a come-and-get-it bank for plagiarists and infringers.

· Artists cannot monitor tens or hundreds of thousands of images every day to see if somebody somewhere has infringed their work.

· There are more than a trillion images subject to orphaning each day.

· If someone can't find me, that doesn't mean I've orphaned my work.

· An unsuccessful search for a property owner should not be a license to steal.

· Artists should not have to digitize their life's work at their own expense to comply with a law they don't want or need.

· The high cost compliance would make compliance prohibitive.

· The loss of exclusive rights would undermine contractual agreements with clients.

· We cannot sell exclusive rights to clients if others can publish our work without our knowledge or consent.

· The loss of exclusive rights would devalue our entire inventories of work.

· Small business owners should not be forced to subsidize the business models of Big Internet firms.

· No rational business owner should have to give access to their inventory, metadata, client contact information, etc. to outside business interests.

Tell lawmakers to prevent passage of this bill until it can be subjected to an open, informed and transparent public examination.

Tell them this is no way to re-write copyright law.

Tell them it will affect millions of rights holders worldwide.

Tell them you would support a true orphan works bill, but this is not it.

Tell them to to consider the amendments presented by the Illustrators' Partnership, Artists Rights Society and Advertising Photographers of America

Some of you care about this and some of you don't.  I'm just posting an e-mail I received from the IPA last night, so please don't shoot the messenger.  I'm also posting a link to the round-table hosted by the US Small Business Administration [link] so you can see why some of us are so concerned about this:

"FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS' PARTNERSHIP

Orphan Works Opposition: Plan B

SEPT 27  Yesterday, in a cynical move, the sponsors of the Senate Orphan Works Act passed their controversial bill by a controversial practice known as hotlining.

With lawmakers scrambling to raise 700 billion dollars to bail out businesses that are "too big to fail," the Senate passed a bill that would force small copyright holders to subsidize big internet interests such as Google, which has already said it plans to use millions of the images this bill will orphan.

With the meltdown on Wall Street, this is no time for Congress to concentrate our nation's copyright wealth in the hands of a few privately owned corporate databases. The contents of these databases would be more valuable than secure banking information. Yet this bill would compel creators to risk their own intellectual property to supply content to these corporate business models. That means it would be our assets at risk in the event of their failure or mismanagement.

As David Rhodes, President of the School of Visual Arts has said, the Orphan Works bill would socialize the expense of copyright protection while privatizing the profit of creative endeavors. Copyright owners neither want nor need this legislation. It will do great harm to small businesses. We already have a banking crisis. Congress should not lay the groundwork for a copyright crisis.

--Brad Holland and Cynthia Turner, for the Illustrators' Partnership

NOW FOR PLAN B

We MUST try to stop the House Judiciary Committee from folding their bill (HR5889) and adopting the Senate version.

PLEASE EMAIL CONGRESS TODAY.
If you've done it before, do it again!

It takes only a minute to use our new special letter.
Click on the link below, enter your zip code, and take the next steps.
Thanks to all of  you who heeded the call to action yesterday.
